WiFi coverage

5 GHz WiFi network not showing up

Your router is supposed to have a fast 5 GHz network, but your device only sees the 2.4 GHz one — or the 5 GHz network appears on some devices and not others.

Quick answer

Either the device doesn't support 5 GHz, it's too far away (5 GHz has shorter range), or the router is using a 5 GHz channel the device can't use. Checking the device's specs and setting the router to a standard 5 GHz channel fixes most cases.

Common causes

Device doesn't support 5 GHz

Older laptops, printers, and many smart devices only have 2.4 GHz radios.

Shorter range

5 GHz is faster but doesn't travel as far or through walls as well as 2.4 GHz.

DFS channels

Some 5 GHz channels (DFS) aren't supported by every device, and routers must move off them if they detect radar.

Band steering combines the names

Many routers show one network name for both bands, so you won't see a separate 5 GHz name.

5 GHz disabled on the router

The 5 GHz radio may be turned off or misconfigured.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. 1

Check whether the device supports 5 GHz

Look up the model's WiFi specs. On Windows, run netsh wlan show drivers and look at supported radio types (802.11a/ac/ax indicate 5 GHz).

  2. 2

    Test near the router

If 5 GHz appears close up but not farther away, it's a range issue.

  3. 3

    Use a non-DFS channel

Set 5 GHz to channel 36, 40, 44, 48, or 149–161, which almost all devices support.

  4. 4

    Check band steering

If both bands share one name, devices choose automatically. Separate the names only if you need to force a device onto one band.

  5. 5

Update the driver and router firmware

Updates often fix 5 GHz compatibility issues.

When to call a technician

If you need fast 5 GHz coverage across the office, the answer is usually more access points, not stronger ones. We plan coverage and channels so devices get the best band wherever they are.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 GHz better than 2.4 GHz?

5 GHz is faster and less crowded but has shorter range. 2.4 GHz reaches farther but is slower and more congested.

Why does my printer only connect to 2.4 GHz?

Most printers and smart devices only include a 2.4 GHz radio. Keep 2.4 GHz enabled for them.

What are DFS channels?

They are 5 GHz channels shared with radar systems. Routers must leave them if radar is detected, and some devices can't use them at all.
