Outlook not responding or freezing

Outlook hangs with "(Not Responding)" in the title bar, takes ages to open, or freezes when you switch folders or open messages.

Quick answer

Add-ins are the most common cause. Start Outlook in safe mode to test without them. If safe mode works, disable add-ins one at a time. If not, a very large mailbox file, a damaged profile, or an Office installation that needs repair is likely.

Common causes

Problem add-ins

Add-ins for PDF tools, CRMs, and meeting apps often slow down or crash Outlook.

Very large mailbox data file

Huge mailboxes and data files make Outlook slow to load and search.

Damaged Outlook profile

Profile corruption causes freezing, especially at startup.

Office needs repair or updates

Damaged or outdated Office installations cause instability.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. 1

    Open Outlook in safe mode

Hold Ctrl while opening Outlook, or run outlook.exe /safe. If it works, an add-in is likely the cause.

  2. 2

    Disable add-ins

Go to File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins and turn them off one at a time to find the culprit.

  3. 3

    Update Office

In File > Office Account, choose Update Options > Update Now.

  4. 4

    Repair Office

In Settings > Apps, choose Microsoft 365 > Modify > Quick Repair, then Online Repair if needed.

  5. 5

    Create a new Outlook profile

In Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles, add a new profile and set it as the default.

Frequently asked questions

Will creating a new Outlook profile delete my email?

Not with Microsoft 365 or Exchange — email is stored on the server and downloads again. Older POP accounts need their data file backed up first.

Why is Outlook slow only when I open certain emails?

An add-in that scans messages, or a large attachment preview, is usually the cause.

Should I use new Outlook or classic Outlook?

New Outlook is simpler and lighter but doesn't support every add-in or feature. Classic Outlook is still needed for some business workflows.
